BLACKPINK, a popular K-pop girl group, has been appointed as the United Nations’ official new Sustainable Development Goals advocates.
Confirming the news, the official tweet from the UN read, “ Welcome #BLACKPINK to the UN family! They have engaged with @COP26 to encourage young people to take #ClimateAction to protect the planet and were appointed today by Secretary-General @antonioguterres as our new Sustainable Development Goals #SDG advocates.”
According to BLACKPINK’s agency, YG Entertainment, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has chosen BLACKPINK to this position in the UN’s headquarters for the first time. To mark the occasion, BLACKPINK told Soompi, “We are honored to join this journey toward a better world.”
For those who are unaware, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 broad objectives aimed at creating a better and more sustainable future for all people by 2030. This includes several global challenges such as poverty and inequality as well as environmental degradation and climate change.
BLACKPINK’s members (Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa) roles will be to raise awareness about these worldwide concerns and to work toward the achievement of the 17 goals.
BLACKPINK was previously recognized as the voice of the United Nations Climate Change Conference earlier this year (COP26)
