The Covid-unvaccinated President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro said on Thursday that he would visit the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, thereby violating the city’s recent announcement that all attending officials and diplomats must show proof of vaccination.
“I will deliver an opening statement at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) next week,” President Trump said via social media on Tuesday.
Bolsonaro said it will be a “calm speech, very objective, focused on the problems that interest us,” and that he plans to talk about Brazil’s approach to the coronavirus pandemic, agriculture, and energy.
There have been issues raised about Bolsonaro’s participation in person after the New York mayor’s office sent a letter to the UNGA outlining the requirements, including that participants must provide proof of vaccination to enter the discussion hall.
Because the UN debate venue is a “convention center,” all attendees are required to get immunized, just like anybody else participating in an indoor activity in the city.
After a few hours, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated he couldn’t impose the rule on world leaders.
In light of Bolsonaro’s recent exposure to the virus, the president has declared that he will be the “last Brazilian” to get vaccinated against the disease.
According to the research firm Our World in Data, Brazil has a population of 213 million people and administers the fourth most vaccination doses worldwide.
Even still, the President has resisted vaccination up until now, arguing that he is already protected because his antibody level is “at the top.”
