PM Modi will virtually attend the SCO summit on September 16.

When the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit takes place on September 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attending the summit virtually. The heads of state of seven other neighboring countries will also attend the high-level summit.

The summit is significant in light of the Afghanistan issue, which saw American soldiers leave the nation after 20 years and the Taliban re-emerge. The war-torn country is set to play a key role in the negotiations.

The SCO summit includes eight member countries: Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Tajikistan is the current Chair of the grouping, and the conference will be held in hybrid mode from September 16 to 17 in the capital Dushanbe.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to attend electronically as well. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and representatives from other Central Asian countries will be in attendance.

Several meetings of SCO foreign, defense, and national security advisors have taken place in Dushanbe during the last two months.
